Custody Officer

The role of the Custody Officer is to monitor, supervise, and maintain custody of prisoners in the Marysville Jail. Marysville custody officers also assist patrol officers and local outside agencies with bookings, transports, and arrests.

    Key Job Duties
  • Book prisoners into jail.
  • Supervise the activities of prisoners within the facility; investigate and report suspected rule violations.
  • Transport inmates to court and other facilities.
  • Maintain statistics and prepare reports.

Custody Officer Qualifications

  • Possess valid Washington State driver’s license or be able to obtain one by date of hire.
  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Be at least 21 years old at time of employment
  • No convictions for a felony offense
  • Possess high school diploma or G.E.D and provide proof of completion upon hire.
  • Be able to effectively work in a potentially aggressive or hostile environment
  • Able to carry and become firearms qualified
  • Possess good written and oral communications skills
  • Able to apply basic math skills to practical situations
  • Able to work a variety of shifts


  • For lateral level applicants, the following additional requirements must be met:
  • Minimum two years experience as a Custody Officer

Application and Selection Process—Entry Level

    The application and selection process is conducted in four phases as described below.

  1. Test Registration

  2. Submit required information to PublicSafetyTesting.com
  3. Interview

  4. The top scoring candidates from the written exam and physical agility test and will participate in an oral board interview.
  5. Eligibility List

  6. Candidates, who successfully complete steps 1-2 as summarized above, will be placed on an eligibility list and may be invited to participate in pre-employment testing as a candidate for Custody Officer. The eligibility list is valid for one-year for the date of adoption and may be extended.
  7. Pre-Employment Testing

  8. At a minimum, pre-employment testing will include the following:
    • Interview with the Police Chief
    • Polygraph examination
    • Psychological examination
    • Extensive background investigation
    • Medical examination and drug screening

Application and Selection Process Advanced-Lateral Level

    The application and selection process is conducted in three phases as described below. Applicants will be notified for current test dates, times and locations.

  4. Qualified Lateral applicants will participate in an oral board interview.
  5. Pre-Employment Testing
  6. As described for Entry-Level Custody Officer.
